EARTH DAY: WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER

BEING MORE SUSTAINABLE BY THE LAKE

Every year, Earth Day reminds us just how precious our planet is – and that it’s up to us to protect it. As a shopping and lifestyle destination in one of Europe’s most beautiful natural settings, we want to do our bit. And inspire you to join in. Because: lots of small, everyday choices really do make a difference when you add them all up.

Conscious shopping – quality over quantity

At the health food shop in LAGO, you’ll find high-quality products, many of which are regional or certified organic. When you shop here, you’re making a conscious choice for quality, short ingredient lists and more sustainable production methods. Fresh farm produce from the region is also available at the Stotz Hof market stall right outside LAGO – every Friday and Saturday from 9.30 am to 8.00 pm, until the end of October.

The same applies to fashion shopping: it’s better to have one favourite piece that will last you a long time than five spontaneous fast-fashion purchases. Timeless styles, good materials and conscious choices directly contribute to sustainability. You can find more inspiration on this in our magazine article on the capsule wardrobe.

Goodbye traffic jams & stress

If you’re coming from Konstanz or the surrounding area, there’s a simple, sustainable way to get here: hop on your bike! You’ll cut down on CO₂ emissions, avoid the hassle of finding a parking space, and start your day of shopping and leisure feeling much more relaxed. Tip: For larger purchases or a family trip, LAGO also has handy cargo bikes available for hire.

Alternatively, you can reach us easily by bus, train or the eco-certified catamaran. Public transport reduces emissions – and you can make good use of the journey: read a book, check your messages, watch a film or simply switch off.

And if you do come by car but are already driving an electric vehicle: you can conveniently charge your vehicle during your visit at the green electricity charging stations in the car park next door.

RECUP instead of single-use

For many people, a coffee to go is simply part of the routine. All the better if it’s sustainable. That’s why the restaurants and cafés offering takeaway services at LAGO have opted for the RECUP reusable system.

For you, this means: borrow a cup, enjoy your drink, return it – and help reduce waste together. And if you bring your own cup, you’re going the extra mile, of course.

Reusable bags instead of plastic bags

A spontaneous shopping trip? It happens – and we love it. But instead of taking a new bag every time, it’s worth having a reusable shopping bag – whether made of fabric, jute or recycled material.

A tip for those who don’t already do this: simply keep a small, foldable bag handy in your rucksack or bike basket.

Receipt? Only if necessary

It’s just a small thing – but one with a big impact if enough people get on board: do you really need a printed receipt? If not – for example, when buying groceries or items that can’t be returned anyway – please make a conscious effort to do without it.

Many shops now offer digital receipt options or their own apps. If you use them, you save paper, keep track of your purchases – and often discover attractive discounts and special deals along the way.

Hard-working role models

Did you know that bees have made their home on the LAGO roof? Since 2020, two bee colonies have been living there in so-called ‘BeeBoxes’ – looked after by an experienced beekeeper and nestled within a green roof area of around 10,600 square metres.

From there, they not only contribute to biodiversity in our local area, but also play a tangible role in protecting our ecosystem. A small step towards greater biodiversity on our lakeshores.

Behind the scenes

We therefore see sustainability as a journey we are undertaking through a series of steps. These include, amongst other things, energy-efficient lighting that uses around 40% less electricity than the previous system, modern building services to optimise energy consumption, and rigorous waste separation behind the scenes.

LAGO is also certified to the BREEAM standard for sustainable buildings. Our partner companies – from facility management and cleaning services to security – also operate in accordance with recognised environmental and quality standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. And we’re staying on track – that’s for sure.

Our conclusion: Sustainability is a team effort

Earth Day serves as a reminder – but every day counts. At LAGO, we want to take responsibility and continue to improve in this regard. That’s why we’re delighted to have everyone on board. Thank you so much, and Happy Earth Day to us all!
