GOLDEN HOUR GUIDE TO KONSTANZ: WHERE YOU CAN EXPERIENCE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS
PURPLE CLOUDS BY THE LAKE – OUR FAVOURITE SUNSET SPOTS
Whether you’re relaxing on a picnic blanket by the water’s edge, out and about with your camera, or sipping a sundowner: these spots provide the perfect backdrop for balmy summer evenings. Some are peaceful and close to nature, others lively and right in the thick of things – but they all have one thing in common: they’re perfect for the golden hour.
Bismarck Tower – As far as the eye can see
High above the city, the Bismarck Tower stands on the Raiteberg – and is our top all-rounder for truly picture-perfect sunsets. From up here, you have an unobstructed view of the city, the lake and the Alps. Particularly striking: the combination of the sweeping horizon and the golden light slowly sweeping across Constance. It’s well worth packing your camera – especially from spring through to late summer.
Tip: Arrive 60 minutes before sunset – and be sure to stay for the blue hour.
Schänzleufer & Dreieckswiese – A front-row seat for the sunset
This is the best spot on the Seerhein to watch the sun go down. The Schänzleufer is one of the most popular spots for unwinding after work – with a wide western exposure, plenty of sky and beautiful reflections on the water. On the Dreieckswiese, you can lie back and relax on the grass as dusk slowly falls. This spot really comes into its own in spring and summer.
Tip: The most beautiful reflections are created right at the low water’s edge.
Smugglers’ Cove & Seestraße – The Alpine Glow Phenomenon
At Smugglers’ Cove, you’ll find a pebble beach, a vast expanse of water and – on a clear day – an impressive Alpine panorama. Although the sun sets just out of sight, from here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sky, water and mountain silhouettes as they take on warm shades of orange and pink. So, no classic setting sun – but a beautiful play of light over the lake and the Alps instead. The adjacent Seestraße is perfect for a stroll in the evening light.
Tip: Take a blanket with you and round off the evening barefoot by the water.
Herosé Park & Bicycle Bridge – Between the Rhine and Bicycles
Herosé Park is situated right on the Seerhein – here you can experience the golden hour in all its vibrancy: cyclists on the bridge, joggers silhouetted against the light, small groups right on the riverbank, and shimmering reflections on the water. If you fancy an urban setting for sunset, this is the perfect spot. It’s easily accessible and particularly popular in summer – so it’s best to arrive a little early.
Tip: You’ll have an unobstructed view from the cycle bridge – but watch out for heavy traffic.
Hörnle – Shaded spots surrounded by greenery
You won’t catch the sunset directly from here either – but instead, you’ll see the opposite shore of the lake, with Meersburg, vineyards and sailing boats, glowing in the warm evening light. This open spot is perfect for capturing sweeping shots of the sky. Another plus point: the huge sunbathing lawn. You’re guaranteed to always find enough space here to spread out a blanket, play a game of spikeball or simply enjoy the evening in peace.
Tip: When there’s a light breeze, beautiful reflections of light create what looks like an endless glittering carpet on the water.
Glorious Garden at LAGO – Happy Rooftop Golden Hour
Do you like things not just urban, but stylish too? Then the Glorious Garden on the LAGO rooftop is the place for you. Here you can enjoy the golden hour with a 360° panoramic rooftop view and a refreshing aperitivo. The sunset here is framed by cool layers of rooftops and glass façades, casting a glow over the harbour and mountains. Ideal for photo shoots, city portraits or simply a special evening with friends or your other half.
Tip: Book early on Friday and Saturday evenings – especially when the weather is good.
Little Venice – Afterglow between the city and the lakeside park
Here, too, the sun disappears behind the houses – but Little Venice is the perfect spot for the last moments of light of the day. Between the harbour atmosphere, the Ferris wheel and the art installation, the expansive lawn right by the water creates a relaxed evening atmosphere, especially when the sky is still glowing and the light lingers over the lake. Ideal for anyone who likes to combine the golden hour with a city walk.
Tip: Perfect for a stroll after shopping at LAGO. You can reach the spot in just a few minutes via the bridge exit over the tracks.
Specials just outside town
– Sandseele & Stedi Kiosk – Off to Reichenau
On the south-western shore of Lake Constance, Sandseele is situated right by the water – with a large lakeside terrace, beach access and views of the Swiss shore and the Höri peninsula. Here, and at Stedi-Reichenau, you can enjoy the evening sun right on your face,
Tip: If you fancy it, grab a drink or snack from the restaurant or kiosk.
– Stotz Hof in Markdorf
About 14 km away and perfect for that rural golden hour aesthetic: fields, fruit trees and warm lighting make this spot picturesque – especially for events or after-work evenings.
