8 ADDRESSES FOR ART LOVERS IN CONSTANCE
FROM ABSTRACT TO CONTEMPORARY: THIS IS HOW ART IS CONSTANCE
First enjoying a bit of the lake, then art – or vice versa: in Constance, the two go hand in hand. Small galleries, hip design exhibitions and charming stores with fine arts and crafts are hidden between the charm of the old town and the panorama of Lake Constance. From historical treasures to contemporary paintings, Constance offers everything an artist’s heart desires. Here, the beautiful and original can not only be viewed – but experienced. And sometimes even take it home with you.
Whether as a creative break after a stroll through the city, as an alternative to bad weather or simply to be inspired: Here are our top tips for art enthusiasts.

1. ARTE KUNSTMESSE KONSTANZ: 3 DAYS OF ART DIRECTLY ON THE LAKE
From July 18 to 20, 2025, the Bodenseeforum will be transformed into a true Eldorado for art lovers: At ARTe Konstanz, around 60 galleries and artists from Germany and neighboring countries will showcase their contemporary works: here you can buy, look and marvel. Four years ago, when the fair came to Constance for the first time, it attracted 1,500 visitors to the city. Free guided tours, a packing service and fine cuisine round off the experience. Our tip: tickets are cheaper online!

2. WESSENBERG GALLERY KONSTANZ: ART IN THE HEART OF THE OLD TOWN
The Wessenberg Gallery is located directly opposite the cathedral. The art museum shows changing exhibitions of well-known and regional artists, primarily southwest German art, from the 19th century to the present day. Currently (and until mid-June), you can visit the exhibition “BLAU. Fascination of a Color”. It deals with the symbolism of the blue color (longing, loyalty and vastness) and includes almost 80 works from Romanticism, Biedermeier, Expressionism, abstract painting and contemporary art. Our tip: be sure to visit the pretty inner courtyard!

4. ROSGARTENMUSEUM KONSTANZ: CITY HISTORY MEETS CULTURE
A true Constance original: The Rosgarten Museum is the city’s art and cultural history museum and offers an exciting insight into the history of Constance and the Lake Constance region. The impressive collection – from medieval artifacts to baroque works of art and everyday objects from past centuries – is housed in a former guild house. This year’s special exhibition “Masquerades. When carnival was still called Fasching” tells of the origins of the carnival guilds on the lake – and transports the Ho Narro! from back then to today.

In a hidden alleyway near the market square, you will find contemporary art in a stylish gallery setting: Galerie Lachenmann Art presents painting, sculpture and photography – by both up-and-coming and established artists: perfect for explorers and collectors. The exhibitions change regularly, accompanied by vernissages, talks with artists and other events. Stefanie Scheurell’s expressive works “De Constance à Paris (et retour)” will adorn the walls until mid-May, challenging socially anchored ideal images of female beauty.

5. EXPERIENCE ARTISAN CRAFTS: WORKSHOPS & ATELIERS IN NIEDERBURG
The oldest district of Constance is not only known for its cozy wine taverns, but also for its small stores, workshops and studios. Here, for example, you will find unique handmade pieces of glass, ceramics and textiles – jewelry, paintings and decorations made with great attention to detail. Even a stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets, past the colorful facades and frescoes of the half-timbered houses, is an experience in itself.
📍 Niederburg, Old Town Constance

6. GALERIE MENSING: POP ART AND MORE ON TWO FLOORS
With over 400 square meters of exhibition space, Galerie Mensing brings the international art scene to Lake Constance. From figurative painting to classical modernism and gaudy pop art: the gallery exhibits paintings, prints, giclées and sculptures by renowned artists such as Romero Britto, Charles Fazzino, Tom Boston and Bram Reijnders. Every single work is for sale. However, a visit is not only worthwhile for collectors, but also for anyone who loves something special.

7. TURM ZUR KATZ: CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE HISTORICAL TOWER
It may not look like a real fairytale from the outside, but the Turm zur Katz is home to fabulous things on the inside: Constance’s oldest residential tower is now part of the cultural center at the cathedral and an exciting place for contemporary design (especially graphics, photography and poster art). The current exhibition (until June) shows works by Swiss photographer Roger Humbert, a pioneer of concrete photography. With his experimental photographs and luminograms, he created fascinating images in which light itself becomes the medium of art.
